THE SAN LUIS OBISPO COAST

The single coolest AVA in all of California
Just miles from the Pacific Ocean

COOLEST CLOSEST LONGEST

The San Luis Obispo Coast and Edna Valley proudly claim the title of the coolest AVA in California, as confirmed by a comprehensive ten-year climatic study from Southern Oregon University. This unique climate contributes to one of the longest growing seasons on the West Coast, with budbreak often occurring as early as February and harvest extending into November.

Our southern location minimizes the threat of harvest rains, allowing us to patiently wait for our grapes to reach their peak physiological ripeness. This extended growing season grants us the best of both worlds: slowly ripened fruit brimming with flavor while preserving the vibrant natural acidity that defines our Cadre wines.

CLOUD WARS

Year-round fog weaves across our region, shaping both its identity and our unique coastal growing conditions. One intriguing aspect is that the warmest part of the day typically occurs around noon, but it’s fleeting, lasting just an hour or two. This moment of warmth follows the morning fog’s retreat and precedes the arrival of cool, fog-laden winds from the depths of the Pacific. Together, this fog and breeze act as nature’s air conditioning, ensuring that our temperatures remain pleasantly cool and moderate—particularly in summer, when many other regions swelter in the heat.

ABOVE & BELOW

The sea exerts a powerful influence on the San Luis Obispo Coast, shaping both the landscape above and the soils below. Just miles from the Pacific, this region boasts a rare transverse valley that opens directly to the ocean, creating a stunning interplay between land and sea. The soil here tells a story that stretches back 17 million years, born from the collision of the Continental and Pacific Plates, which sculpted the breathtaking San Luis Obispo coastline and the Edna Valley.

Within this dynamic landscape lies a remarkable tapestry of soil structures, each a testament to geological history. From ancient marine deposits and volcanic rock to weathered sandstone and shale, this diverse array of parent materials is underpinned by various clays and sands. This is cool-climate maritime viticulture at its finest, with the ocean's influence permeating the weather, enriching the soil, and ultimately forming the backbone of our exceptional wines.
