THE EDNA VALLEY

The single coolest AVA in all of California
Just 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean

COOLEST CLOSEST LONGEST

The Edna Valley is the single coolest AVA in all of California as proven by a Southern Oregon University ten-year climatic study of every region in California. This results in one of the, if not, the single longest growing seasons on the West Coast. Budbreak can come as early as February and harvest could roll into November.  Our location is far enough South that we don’t have ongoing risks of harvest rains.  Hence, we can patiently wait for our fruit to hang and achieve ideal physiological ripeness.

That long growing season allows us to get the best of both worlds….slowly ripened fruit full of flavor all while preserving the natural acidity that defines the Cadre wines.

CLOUD WARS

Year round fog defines the region and our coastal growing conditions.  A fascinating fact of the region is that our warmest part of a typical day is right around noon and only lasts an hour or two.  That small gap comes after the morning fog burns off and before the deep waters of the Pacific deliver cool foggy coastal afternoon winds.  That fog and wind acts as our natural air conditioning, keeping temperatures cool and moderate, especially during the summer months when many other regions are much warmer.

ABOVE & BELOW

The sea has an immense influence on the Edna Valley…both above and below the ground.  Only 5 miles from the Pacific, it’s home to a rare transverse valley that opens up directly to the ocean. It has a dynamic mix of soil diversity that goes back 17 million years when the Continental and Pacific Plates collided to create what is now the San Luis Obispo coastline and the Edna Valley.

The region has dozens of soil structures that cover a dynamic range of parent material including ancient marine deposits, volcanic rock, and weathered sandstone and shale all amongst a base of various clays and sand. This is cool climate maritime viticulture to the max with the sea influencing the weather, the soil, and ultimately the backbone of our wines.
